The European Timber Trade Federation (FEBO) has called for more co-ordinated wood promotion in the EU.

FEBO deputy general secretary Sabine Heyman, attending the annual European Timber Councils meeting in Talinn, said the timber trade needed to be more involved in promotion.

Ms Heyman said timber trade enterprises are in the best position to provide information about the market to timber councils. She said businesses spend around 1-2% of their sales on publicity – up to €280m for all FEBO members.

FEBO does not intend to start its own promotional campaigns but wants to acts as a partner in co-ordinating promotion on an EU level, together with timber councils and industry representatives.

Ms Heyman said campaigns focusing on the ecological aspects of wood should be supported by trade action, such as buying wood from sustainable sources.
