Timber has been used extensively to construct a new primary school in Bury St Edmunds.

Abbots Green Primary School boasts a 220m deep timber stud frame, a glulam post and beam main hall, ThermoWood cladding and aluminium-faced wooden windows.

Rhymney-based Excel Industries Ltd’s enhanced vapour transfer (EVT) technology was utilised in the walls to deliver a U-value of 0.19 W/m2K and protect the structure against interstitial condensation.

Excel supplied its Warmcell 500 recycled newspaper insulation for the walls and Warmcell 300 for lofts, along with sheathing board Panelvent and Paneline, plus Sarket roof sarking.

The EVT structure was specified due to its thermal performance and compliance with Suffolk County Council’s policy of using sustainable building products with low embodied energy.
