The first trainees to sign up to the Institute of Wood Science (IWSc) Foundation Course in Timber are due to take their examinations.
The students from Morgan Timber in Kent and Morgan Timber and Boards in Kidderminster will take their Timber Studies Award Examination in November and December.
IWSc director David Woodbridge said enquiries and registrations for the new course continue to be buoyant. A group of 14 at Montague L Meyer Ltd recently signed up along with groups at David Cover and Son Ltd and Carvers Ltd. The James Latham Group and several individual students are following the course through TRADA Technology.
Mr Woodbridge added: ‘A substantial group will be commencing the course as part of a major, broadly based in-company training initiative by Timbmet Ltd in December.
‘We are heartened by the fact that enquiries and orders for the course are coming from organisations that are more concerned with the use of wood and the fabrication of timber based products than the traditional timber merchant and importer,’ he said.
Nine candidates will take their exams at SCA‘s Tunadal sawmill in Sweden in early March. Successful candidates will receive the IWSc Timber Studies Award.
