Ronald Law, former boss of sawmill company RM Law (Cupar) Ltd, has been fined £1,000 for failing to ensure the health, safety and welfare of employees and for failing to provide plant and systems of work that were safe as far as reasonably practicable.

In December 1999, employee Andrew Johnstone died after becoming trapped in machinery on the company’s premises.

The business went into receivership three months after the accident following what was described as a protracted struggle against cheap imports of processed timber.
