The 1,000m2 of plywood was used during renovations on the Berlaymont building’s 13th floor, where commission president Manuel Barroso has his office.
Greenpeace claimed wood used in the plywood had probably come from rainforests in Indonesia.
“The plywood was used despite the fact that the commission required the contractor to use only certified timber,” said Greenpeace’s Sebastien Risso.
The contractor involved has been fined €750.
Greenpeace originally claimed that uncertified wood was being used in the building project in May 2004, but commission vice-president Siim Kallas has now confirmed the infringement.
