Timber frame designers, structural certifiers and verifiers are to be updated on how Eurocode 5 applies to the design of timber frame houses.
Half-day seminars in Glasgow (March 11 and Inverness (March 18) are being run by Structural Engineers Registration Ltd and Napier University’s Centre for Timber Engineering.
BSI will withdraw 57 national standards, including well-known codes for timber such as BS5268, when Eurocode 5 is introduced on March 31.
The Eurocode covers the design of timber buildings and civil engineering works and uses the limit-state concept instead of the traditional permissible stress method.
Most public sector organisations, utilities and product manufacturers will be using Eurocodes for all new designs. Withdrawn codes can still be used on private sector buildings but designers and certifiers will need to be satisfied their continued usage is appropriate to a particular design.
Seminar topics being covered include design principles, stability, internal and external walls, roof bracing design, wall ties, connection detailing, responsibilities (kit manufacturer, truss manufacturer, design certifier, structural engineer responsible for other aspects of the design).
Speakers include Napier University lecturer Dr Robert Hairstans, an experienced project manager and a member of the UK constitution for the Design of Timber Building Structures to Eurocode 5.
Mark Lawler, a partner in Edinburgh-based structural engineering practice, will cover responsibilities of the design certifier and the building warrant process.
