The European Union, which imports about 60% of Ghana’s timber a year, is urging the country to accelerate its conversion of forest concessions to Timber Utilisation Contracts (TUC).

The move is part of the EU‘s efforts to improve forest management in supplier countries. Using the TUC system, countries are entitled to Timber Rights Fees from the EU which is intended to benefit the communities in which felling concessions were granted.

Ghana’s minister of lands, forests and mines, Dominic Fobih, said the conversion of concessions to TUCs had been a slow process but stakeholders were now willing to support their implementation.
