The US is bracing itself against the threat of tariffs which, if implemented, would devastate the US softwood lumber export market in Europe.

The European Union has proposed a tariff of up to 100% on all US softwood lumber – and other US exports – in retaliation to the US’s alleged failure to bring its tax laws into compliance with World Trade Organisation rules against export subsidies.

Southern Forest Products Association spokesman Jerry Hingle, quoted in the newsletter Random Lengths International, said: “If it happens, we’re done.”

However, he believes the issue can be resolved without tariffs and said strong opposition to the proposal in Europe would help.

US companies are being urged to ask their European customers, distributors and other contacts to write to the European Commission explaining the impact the tariff will have on their company or the European market.
