The talks, to be held in Brussels, are aimed at establishing a voluntary partnership agreement with Malaysia under FLEGT which would guarantee Malaysian timber products access to the EU.

Plantation Industries and commodities minister Peter Chin will head the Malaysian delegation. One of the talking points is likely to be the definition of legal timber.

The Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation says the EU definition of legality is different from that of other countries, but the organisation is confident an agreement can be reached.

Malaysia’s timber exports to the EU totalled M$2.8bn in 2005.
