The European Commission is planning to monitor the health of Europe’s forests at a cost of e13 million per year.

The EC has proposed a monitoring scheme to run from January 2003 until December 2008, with a scientific co-ordination body set up within the EU‘s joint research centre to collect and access data on forest health.

The body would co-operate with international organisations to mornitor forest air pollution as well as finance studies to develop monitoring of forest biodiversity, carbon sequestration and forest soils.

EU ministers will meet to discuss the proposals.
