Europe’s new energy and climate package takes good account of the special characteristics of Finland and its forest industry, according to the Finnish Forest Industries Association (FFIF).

The package, backed by the European Parliament just before Christmas, stipulates that the Finnish forest industry will be allocated emission allowances free of charge, except for electricity generated and consumed at production facilities.

FFIF said the great majority of the industry’s emissions allowances would therefore continue to be allocated for free, encouraging companies to continue manufacturing operations in Europe.

The EU took into consideration the needs of sectors which compete internationally and could not transfer the additional costs emissions trading causes into the prices of end products.
