Plans to stop logging in Estonia’s state forests for two months this spring are concerning the country’s timber industry which says the move will hike prices.

The proposal has been put forward by the Estonian State Forest Management Centre and chief forester Juri Tambets says it is based on a sustainable forestry standard.

However, timber firms fear the break will threaten the industry. Margus Kohava, manager of the Sauga sawmill, said there was already a shortage of hardwood logs and the logging break would make the raw material problem even worse.

A shortage of wood would immediately push up timber prices, he said.
