Veteran of the environmental movement Jonathan Porritt, now chairman of the UK Sustainable Development Commission, will be among the speakers at the event in London in February.
Organised by the Institution of Civil Engineers, the conference will look at latest developments in government procurement policy and environmental legislation affecting the building sector.
“The government’s response to the proposed Action Plan from the Sustainable Procurement Taskforce is due out imminently and will undoubtedly call for a much more urgent approach to sustainability in all procurement decisions,” said Mr Porritt. “That makes it an absolute priority for everyone involved in both public and private sector procurement.”
Another speaker at the event will be David Wright, regional director for the North East Centre of Excellence. “We must learn to harness the potential added social and economic value and control the environmental impact of this country’s significant construction spend,” he said.
Sir Nevill Sim, who heads the government’s Sustainable Procurement Task Force will also present on its National Action Plan and the keynote speaker will be Ian Pearson, minister for climate change and the environment.
Speakers will also look at latest sustainable housing and school construction methods.
