Young scientists from St Joseph’s RC Middle School in Hexham, Northumberland have been working with wood-based panels manufacturer Egger UK Ltd on a Year 8 materials science research project.

In conjunction with Egger, the children have undertaken a series of classroom experiments, including a sieve analysis of chipboard geometry to see how different densities affect product performance.

A visit to Egger enabled the children to learn how chipboard is made and they were able to see performance testing on wood-based panels manufactured at the site in the company’s quality assurance laboratories.

The school received a £2,300 grant from the UK’s national academy of science, The Royal Society, as part of its Education Partnership Grant scheme.
