Scientists, foresters and researchers from 18 countries travelled to a Forestry Research-hosted conference in Edinburgh to begin work on the EU-backed four-year Eforwood project.

Eforwood, launched in Sweden last year, is designed to develop computer software which can measure the impact of all the activities involved in growing and managing forests to transporting and processing forest products.

Bill Mason, Forest Research’s head of forest management, said: “We need to be able to measure the impacts of our activities in an ordered, logical and scientifically sound way so that we know exactly what the impacts are and just how sustainable our activities are.”

Conference delegates visited Dumfries and Galloway on May 10 to learn about Forestry Commission Scotland’s management of Ae Forest and saw a modern sawmill in action at Lockerbie.
