Private investment is key to the model and will drive efforts to give Peru’s indigenous population responsibility for monitoring deforestation, while leaving wood transformation and commercialisation in the hands of export companies, ADEX has said.

“Establishing private investment in inaccessible, poverty-stricken areas where the population doesn’t have sufficient capital and infrastructure to take advantage of their substantial forest resource will help them reach these objectives,” according to ADEX.

It is also hoped that the model will help Peru and Columbia secure Free Trade agreements with the US.
