Newhaven Ports and Properties is actively looking for timber cargoes to be shipped to the East Quay again.

About 500,000 tonnes of timber, mainly from the Baltics, and other imports were handled at the quay until 1999 when James Fisher ended its operations there.

Newhaven Ports and Properties purchased the quay, ferry terminals and land last year in a £15m deal with Sea Containers and, following improvement work, freight is being sought again.

Port manager Steve Bulman said although no cargoes were being brought in at the moment, negotiations were under way with shippers. ‘Timber is one of the cargoes we are looking to bring in,’ he said.

The 380m quay has 90,000ft of warehousing.
