Dutch timber trader Guus Kouwenhoven has been cleared of exchanging weapons for timber concessions in Liberia by the Hague Appeals Court.

Mr Kouwenhoven had been sentenced to eight years in prison for allegedly supplying anti-tank weapons and AK-47 machine guns to Charles Taylor’s former regime.

However, the court ruled that the evidence against Mt Kouwenhoven and his company Oriental Trading Corporation was not strong enough to support the conviction.
