A snowbound Dundee-based timber company is to use a JCB to clear 1ft of snow from its yard as it seeks to continue deliveries.
Rembrand Timber Ltd, which has 17 branches across Scotland, has already used a tonne of salt at the Dundee depot but fresh snowfalls have led the company to seek help from a local farmer’s digger.
“We’re not making any deliveries today,” said director Jeff Low this morning. “Snow is just covering everything at the moment. The winds are supposed to be getting up and another big snowfall is predicted.
“It’s definitely not what we wanted; we have a lot of promotions at the moment such as ‘Beat the VAT’, but the customers can’t get in.”
Despite the disruption, which has also affected the company’s Inverurie branch, Mr Low said the company has capitalised on the weather by promoting its salt stocks, snow shovels and de-icer to customers with a “be prepared” message.
He hopes to place advertising on the local radio station promoting the 3-4 lorry loads of salt it took delivery of in advance of the bad weather.
“Everyone in the construction industry has been praying for a mild winter but it doesn’t look very likely. In the winter you just want to be keeping things ticking over, getting out and making deliveries. Hopefully people won’t shut their doors too early before Christmas.”
A photo of one of Rembrand’s timber trucks which had jack-knifed across the snowbound B974 was used in several national newspapers last week.
