Rapid business growth and commercial development in Dubai has led to the emirate achieving a 36% increase in the overall trading of wood and wood products in 2004 compared to 2003.

Exports of wooden products last year increased by 56% on the previous year, while imports rose by 42%.

Goods traded included railway sleepers, plywood, wooden frames and packing cases.

A spokesperson for the department of statistics said: “The marked increase in imports of wooden products is mainly due to the major growth in the construction sector in Dubai, with residential and commercial enterprises coming up across the city.”

Growth in the trading of wood products is expected to continue and manufacturers are increasingly turning towards renewable resources and investing in new technology and machinery.
