Canada Wood UK has received numerous specifier and merchant enquiries for Douglas fir plywood but says there is apparently no supplies available to meet demand.

John Park, UK office director for Canada Wood, said in recent weeks he had taken calls from architects, contractors and small builders who wanted the product.

But after follow-up enquiries with importers he has drawn a blank in trying to find available stock to satisfy the enquiries.

Mr Park said importers were not stocking the product because of its higher cost in relation to other products.

“The trend in the plywood market has been to go down the route of low prices, so Canadian softwood plywood has been pushed out,” said Mr Park.

He said importers also ought to look at the appropriateness of plywood products for construction works and said the Douglas fir product’s performance credentials were well established.
