James Donaldson & Sons has stayed in profit despite the impact of the recession on the construction sector.
Announcing its end of financial year results, the Fife-based timber specialist said its profits before tax were down from last year, at £615,000, but that this was “an impressive feat” in the face of challenging conditions.
Turnover for the year to March was £80.7m – up 3.5% on last year.
“The performance of the Group represents a commendable achievement given the economic backdrop,” said Donaldson Group chairman and chief executive Neil Donaldson.
“We are incredibly proud to have not just survived, but to have actually made a profit during the recession when so many businesses are disappearing around us.
“The market has picked up in recent months and trading has been better than we have experienced for some time; we’ve had a very promising start to the year,” he said, but added that proposed public spending cuts may impact on trading in the months ahead.
Donaldson Group is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year.
