A strain of oak disease – Sudden Oak Death – discovered in northern California, is spreading and threatening other tree species including the California redwood.
The disease has moved from the Pacific coast to the foothills of Sierra Nevada where it is affecting maple trees according to the newspaper USA Today.
Laboratory tests confirm that the disease also kills the most important hardwood in the US timber industry, northern red oak.
