Consultation has begun on a proposal to bring in “stronger sustainability performance provisions” in building contracts.
The Joint Contracts Tribunal (JCT) Ltd has begun a month-long consultation following “successful discussions” between the organisation and senior executives from across the industry in December.
Companies and organisations from all sides of the construction industry and throughout the supply chain have been asked for feedback on the proposal, with JCT looking to “ascertain whether tha sentiment is prevalent across the industry”.
“As over 70% of all building contracts are under a JCT form, we have an opportunity to gain consensus from, and perhaps provide leadership to, the industry to help improve its record on sustainability,” said Professor Peter Hibberd, secretary-general of JCT.
“The construction industry generally appears to accept that something has to be done about sustainability and, as it is the largest industry in the economy, it has to take responsibility, and to some degree leadership, in introducing changes.”
