Sales of timber decking at Travis Perkins plc increased ‘significantly’ during the first four months of 2002 compared with the previous year.

Chief executive Frank McKay said sales of engineered and decorative products outstripped those of carcassing.

He said: ‘There is an increase in lifestyle expectations. People are looking to have a better life and are willing to invest in it. Where timber is really benefiting is in products such as decking.’

Overall sales at Travis Perkins were up 9% while like-for-like sales showed a 6% improvement. Timber sales increased slightly less than heavyside.

The branch network now totals 522, with 20 outlets added this year including wholsesalers the Canvey Timber Company and Sparks builders merchants, which has six branches in the Manchester area.

Mr McKay added: ‘Interest rates are remaining low and consumer confidence is positive so there is no reason why we should not have a good year. Timber will benefit as much as other parts of our business.’

He said the company would continue to grow by about 40 branches a year through acquisitions and new greenfield sites.
