The publication of two opposing studies has fuelled debate about whether logging after wildfires helps or harms forest health.

A paper by the Society of American Foresters says environmental reviews, appeals and lawsuits effectively waste timber and hold up forest recovery following wildfires.

But a study by the American Land Alliance says cutting dead trees degrades the ground, pollutes streams, destroys wildlife habitat and does not help reduce future fire risk.

The papers were published as Oregon congressman Greg Walden prepares to propose legislation which would speed up logging after natural disasters such as wildfires, insect infestations and hurricanes.
