Danish foreign minister Per Stig Moeller has called for a Europe-wide ban on imports of timber and other materials from Burma, after the recent unrest in the country.

Mr Moeller told the news agency Ritzau that the Danish government only wants to see action taken against the country’s military rulers, not the Myanmar people, with the Junta controlling much of the Asian country’s industry.

European Union foreign ministers are due to meet in Luxembourg on October 15 to discuss impementing sanctions against Burma’s ruling party, which includes the trade of materials such as timber.
