A record 2.6 million m³ of wood was felled in Denmark’s forests in 2007, according to the Nordic Forest Owners’Association.

Softwood consumption in the country’s wood industries also hit a record 1.3 million m³, a reason for the increased felling.

The 2007 felling rate, which exceeded the previous highest total in 2006 by 9%, was still only half the 5 million m³ annual growth in Danish forests, giving plenty of room for further rises in harvesting levels.

But the Danish Forest Association would like to see further government initiatives to promote wood for energy use. At present, Danish forests provide one-third of the country’s total renewable energy production.
