The Nottingham-based machinery company supplied Lowdens, which manufactures its guitars in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland, with a ST80 Stenner resaw – the smallest in Stenner’s stand-alone resaw range.

"This is probably the most unusual applications that we have come across for a hardwood board for a Stenner resaw but the fact is that a machine was required to manufacture super thin hardwood board for the guitar bodies," said Francis Dalton, director of Daltons Wadkin.

The Stenner ST80 had its invertor feed modified so that it could feed down to 2m/min. A flat fence was used and a board width of 3.5mm achieved.

As well as providing accurate thin kerf "deeping", Lowdens said the resaw is used for its other hardwood dimensioning, especially neck blanks.

Some of Lowdens’ most expensive acoustic guitars cost more than £7,000 and feature timbers such as Tasmanian blackwood, Honduras mahogany, cocobolo and reclaimed Brazilian rosewood.

Leading guitarists who own Lowden guitars include Eric Clapton and David Gray.
