Indonesian customs officials have recently seized about 20 ships carrying illegal timber.
Media reports suggest some 613,000m3 of illegal wood worth US$376,344 was being carried on eight ships which were detained in Riau Islands province during January.
The ships had allegedly been attempting to smuggle their cargo into Malaysia and Singapore.
Customs officials admit that illegal timber smuggling is difficult to thwart in the province.
