Croatia’s wood industry is at risk of losing 50,000 jobs, according to a report in the Croatian Times.

The newspaper said timber industry members of the Croatian Chamber of Economy raised the fear following a conference about the problems facing the industry due to the global recession.

About 5,000 workers are reported to have lost their jobs in the past 12 months, with tens of thousands more in the timber and related industries under threat.

The warning comes at a time of under-utilisation of domestic logs.
