The Central Point of Expertise (CPET) on Timber is to work alongside the newly-created Centre of Expertise for Sustainable Procurement (CESP).

CPET said it would work alongside CESP and will continue to offer free specialist advice and guidance on timber procurement to all public sector buyers and their suppliers.

CESP, to be established within the Office of Government Commerce, was announced in chancellor Alistair Darling’s recent budget report and will help Whitehall departments achieve their targets for reducing carbon emissions and waste across the governement estate.

“There is still a long way to go but the establishment of CESP marks the culmination of significant progress over the last 12 months,” said cabinet secretary Sir Gus O’Donnell. “This central co-ordination and guidance will help all government departments work to deliver sustainable working practices for the future.”

Details of CESP’s activities are being developed and will be published by the end of the summer.
