An update on the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR) has been posted on the website of the government’s Central Point of Expertise for Timber Procurement (CPET).

The updates explain about the legislation, due to come into force in 2013, due diligence and risk assessment of timber imports and outline the negotiations now being conducted by the European Commission to add detail to provisions in the regulation.

Defra is involved in these negotiations and has had excellent input from many key stakeholders,” the update says.

“Secondary legislation will elaborate, among other details, on the procedure and criteria for becoming recognised as a monitoring organisation and on the criteria for conducting due diligence.

“Once this secondary legislation is finalised, Defra will draft legislation to implement the provisions of the EUTR in the UK. Defra will put in place a robust regime with dissuasive, effective and proportionate penalties.”
