A consultancy designed to champion modular construction in the building industry has been launched by TTL Chiltern, parent of TRADA Technology.

The venture – called Chiltern Clarke Bond and launched in association with engineering consultant Clarke Bond – marries TRADA Technology’s in-depth knowledge of modular timber design with Clarke Bond’s experience of prefabrication.

The new company is tasked to win builders over to modular construction in timber, masonry and steel. Once converted to the building method, it will sell them a design-to-building management service for modular construction.

The business, based at offices in High Wycombe and Bristol and already employing six engineering consultants, is said to plug the critical shortage for engineers and CAD draftspeople with the relevant skills and expertise. The team will focus on pushing the inherent advantages of modular construction such as doing away with wet trades on site and speed of construction.

Andrew Abbott, managing director of TRADA Technology, said: ‘We are targeting developers, clients and housebuilders and are looking to make it easier for them to buy modular construction. We want them to see that to anybody who is looking for a fast turnaround this method has huge benefits.’

Martin Milner, former head of timber engineering at TRADA Technology, who heads up the new operation as managing director, said that the consultancy was not material specific.

‘We will work with whatever materials deliver the best value solution for each project,’ he added.
