Barnsley-based engineered timber structure manufacturer Constructional Timber has bought a new, larger factory and is re-entering the straight glulam beam market.

Constructional Timber director Martin Daws told TTJ that the company was investing in the region of £250,000 on the new 80,000ft2 factory and associated improvements, while it was now also stocking straight beams sourced through NFP Europe.

“We will be moving in to the new factory within the next few months,” said Mr Daws. “We have outgrown our current site, it’s just not suitable for the type of projects we’re now doing.”

The new facility gives the company nearly four times more space, with undercover storage and 4,000ft2 of office space.

He also said Constructional Timber had stocked straight beams several years ago but was forced to stop because of space restrictions in the current facility.

“The new site allows us to go back into the straight beams. “We’re looking to develop the market with timber frame companies and merchants.”

Constructional Timber is currently stocking about 40-45m3 of straight 12m-long whitewood GL24H-grade glulam beams in a variety of sizes.

Beams are manufactured at NFP Europe’s Italian supply partner Albertani Corporates SpA, which produced the Tecsol brand of glulam.

Mr Daws reported healthy levels of the company’s core project work. It is currently working on a large project in Woking, providing a glulam gridshell roof for the WWF’s new headquarters in what represents a £1m project for Constructional Timber.
