Construction products sales rose significantly in the second quarter and manufacturers are confident of further growth in the third quarter, according to a new survey.

The Construction Products Association/Ernst and Young’s industry barometer reading in the second quarter was 77 (50 = no change in sales), indicating improved sales.

Heavyside manufacturers rose to 79, with lightside up to 66.

“This latest survey illustrates that the situation for the construction products industry is substantially better than it was one year ago but, with major public spending cuts looming, manufacturers fear that sales will fall sharply once again,” said Construction Products Association economics director Noble Francis.

Ernst and Young pointed out that the latest figures compared to a bad quarter 12 months ago and following a tough January/February this year.

It said increased confidence was also reflected in the return of transaction activity in the sector.
