Construction product sales have reached a new low, according to the latest Ernst and Young/Construction Products Association (CPA) Activity Barometer.

The barometer shows a score of 13 for the final quarter of 2008, compared to a mark of 50, which represents “no change”.

The result is the lowest since the barometer started 16 years ago and down from a peak score of 80 recorded in the second quarter of 2007.

CPA chief executive Michael Ankers said heavyside manufacturers had been hardest hit by the slowing market. “Some have seen orders fall by 40% in less than a month,” said Mr Ankers.

“What is of particular concern is that the situation has deteriorated significantly in the last few weeks,” said Mr Ankers.
