Building company Breyer Group has managed to divert more than 1,000 tonnes of waste wood away from the waste stream.

Breyer’s specialist wood recycling partner, the National Community Wood Recycling Project (NCWRP), said the milestone was reached recently.

The collaboration between Breyer Group and the NCWRP started two years ago and involves collecting waste wood from many of Breyer Group’s building sites.

The collected wood is sorted and much of it reused for DIY/building projects, made into a wide range of recycled wood products or used as firewood or kindling. The remainder is recycled as fuel or back into chipboard. The NCWRP finds a use for 100% of the timber collected.

“The Breyer Group is the first building contractor we have worked with nationwide that has reached this important milestone. We are very pleased to be celebrating with them,” said Richard Mehmed, managing director of the NCWRP.

The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) estimates the volume of waste timber generated annually in the UK at around 4.5-4.6 million tonnes, of which 2.3 million tonnes is understood to come from the construction industry alone.
