PEFC secretary-general Ben Gunneberg, writing in the PEFC January newsletter, said the workshop, to take place at the end of January, would start the review process.

“It is now over seven years since PEFC was launched and the forestry world has changed significantly in that time,” said Mr Gunneberg.

“It is now timely for the organisation to undertake a comprehensive review of its values, visions and mission to develop appropriate strategies.”

The number of PEFC chain of custody certificates rose by 19% in 2006, with strong growth reported in France, Germany and the UK, and also in countries which do not yet have national PEFC representation, such as the Netherlands, China, Hungary, Malaysia and Morocco.

A new PEFC promotion initiative will be launched in China shortly.
