The Lessons Learnt publication, produced by English Partnerships, the Department for Communities and Local Government and partners, highlights the 10 lessons learnt from the competition and provides details on the winning schemes.

The competition challenged the housebuilding industry to build high-quality and sustainable homes for a construction cost of £60,000. Timber-based construction features strongly in the nine winning schemes, with the first homes due to be completed this summer.

Lessons learnt include the compatibility of quality and cost, importance of future-proofing and the success of builders working with new partners.

“Creating sustainable communities can be a complex and difficult process,” said Ruth Kelly, secretary of state for communities and local government.

“It is vital that we build on what has been learnt from the Design for Manufacture competition and bring the lessons learnt from this project through to mainstream housebuilding.”

A dedicated website, www.designformanufacture.info, has been set up to chart the progress of the nine winning developments.
