A new inquiry into the timber trade and the future role of carbon markets in protecting forests has been launched by the House of Commons’ environmental audit committee (EAC).

The EAC, which has previously slated the timber trade and government on their sustainable timber record, will again examine government sustainable procurement of forest products, as well as the interaction of carbon finance mechanisms with the timber trade.

“The government has commissioned an independent review into the role of international finance mechanisms in preserving global forests to tackle climate change,” the EAC said.

“The committee will explore this issue and also take this opportunity to follow up on its 2006 report into sustainable timber.”

The committee is asking for submissions from organisations and individuals by October 13. They should be sent to eacom@parliament.co.uk and marked “Forest Inquiry”.
