SFA deputy director Lei Jiafu, speaking during the International Exhibition on Woodworking Machinery and Furniture Manufacturing Equipment in Beijing, said the industry’s production value hit about US$91bn in 2005, a 100% rise compared to 2001.

During the five-year period, China’s wood flooring output rose by 182% to 300 million m3, while wood-based panels production reached 52.1 million m3 – the biggest in the world.

Mr Jiafu said the forestry sector would focus on conservation of the environment and development of forest products during the next five years.

Application of new science and technology, plus reform of the forest ownership system will be two of the main priorities.
