Two Chinese ports are now accepting shipments of British Columbia (BC) logs without being treated for pests, according to industry newsletter Random Lengths.

Putian (Fujian province) and Taicang (near Shanghai) will now accept untreated BC logs all year, an improvement from the previous situation when untreated logs could only be shipped in to Putian during the winter months.

The improved access is expected to boost Canada’s log exports to China and make BC logs more competitive with rival Alaskan and Russian logs, which were already accepted all year by Chinese ports.

Observers told Random Lengths that the majority of Canadian log shipments to China involved lower-grade logs.
