Chiltern International Fire has invested in a new bespoke fire resistance test furnace, as part of a £500,000 investment at its test laboratory.

The 3x3m vertical unit is capable of testing up to 1,250ºC, with a 180-channel data logging system and automatic temperature and pressure controls providing an enhanced test environment.

It has been designed and manufactured by Cheshire-based Furnace Construction Co Ltd, and is floor mounted for an optimal monitoring position.

Chiltern’s existing horizontal furnaces have also been upgraded to include more complex data logging and control systems, as well as the addition of viewing galleries, showers and new storage facilities for testing materials at the High Wycombe site.

“The refurbishment programme will enable us to provide a more efficient testing facility for our staff and clients,” said Mark Cummings, section leader of fire resistance testing.

“Demand for fire testing has been growing strongly and the enhanced testing facilities will enable us to offer a prompt turnaround with swifter reporting.”

The new furnace is compatible with a range of standards and legislation, including EN 1364-1, EN1364-2, ASTM E119, UL 10b and ISO standards.
