A doorway and window opening that were bricked up during building work at Fairfield General Hospital have been cleverly disguised with joinery features.

Chelford Joinery Specialists of Knutsford, one of the British Woodworking Federation‘s newest members, fabricated and fitted a pair of curving screens to mask the alterations and house two specially commissioned pieces of art in the hospital’s main corridor.

The pair of 1900mm wide and 1750mm high screens were constructed using sections of solid ash as formers for a build up of MDF, laminates and veneers, applied using rapid curing adhesives.

The completed panels were then sealed and lacquered to protect them and ensure a uniformity of finish. Glazed panels completed the illusion that the screens infill similarly sized recesses.
