The Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) has recommended that consumers put certified timber products on their Christmas present wish list.

The main aim of the environmentalist body’s pre-Christmas campaign statement is to advise people against buying certain products. These include ivory, coral, snakeskin boots, wild cacti, black caviar, tiger cubs and even North Sea cod. Many types of TVs and stereo systems are also off-limits environmentally.

But WWF spokesperson Olivier van Bogaert said that timber products “that carry certified labels” are acceptable Xmas gifts – as are certified fish prod-ucts.
