Western red cedar shingles have helped a new primary school in Swansea achieve a BREEAM ‘very good’ assessment rating.

The shingles form a “cedar shell” around the exterior walls of Llwynderw Primary School according to architect Stride Treglown Davies, which helped produce a “visually stunning” finish.

The shingles, supplied by John Brash, also add to the structure’s environmental credentials by providing insulation, low embodied energy and natural renewability inherent with timber. All primary schools costing more than £500,000 must achieve a BREEAM ‘very good’ rating.

“Creating the building using western red cedar was a real joy, mainly because its lightweight nature gave us much more flexibility in the design,” said a spokesperson for Stride Treglown Davies.

“This project really shows what can be achieved using western red cedar shingles both from a sustainable and design point of view,” added Christian Brash, managing director at John Brash.
