Timber garage door manufacturer Cedar Doors has installed additional SCM machinery at its Somercotes factory.
The investment is part of an expansion into the production of bespoke doors and windows.
“We didn’t want to go into mass production and compete with the big boys, but supply the small builder and self-builder with bespoke joinery made to the very highest standard and finish, so then they continually come back to us for more doors and windows on further projects,” said Tony Humphreys, owner and managing director.
“As we fill the largest hole in the house with a garage door, we wanted to offer our customers the full service and fill the remaining holes with doors and windows, especially if non-standard dimensions were required.”
Cedar Doors installed two SCM planer moulders 18 months ago and has now added to that with an SCM Record 110NT TVN Prisma Machining Centre, featuring a 650mm-long table that can accommodate components for an 18ft-wide garage door.
A Rapid 24 Automatic Toolchanger, which can accept large diameter cutters and saws necessary for door and window production, was specified with the Prisma.
A Sandya 16/S RCS1350 widebelt sander was also installed, featuring two sanding units, a grooved steel calibrating roller followed by a combined roller/pad unit to both calibrate and finish sand solid wood and panels in only one pass.
Cedar Doors expanded to its 30,000ft² purpose-built factory three years ago because of high demand.
Mr Humphreys said he was impressed with the quality of work produced on the machines and said they would help the company take advantage of signs of an upturn in the market.
