Timber for an external curving spiral staircase in Newcastle was supplied by Timbmet.
The ‘Blue Carpet’ staircase, designed by artist Thomas Heatherwick, was made from Brazilian cedar by Tyneside boatbuilder McNulty Boats.
Providing a link between the city centre, a new public square and a car parking area, the staircase, which appears to be light and self-supporting, weighs more than 30 tonnes.
