Canfor Corp is to close its sawmill in Mackenzie in British Columbia, Canada, indefinitely.
The decision has been taken in order to “minimise operating losses during this period of prolonged poor lumber markets and ongoing production curtailments,” the company said, with production increased at other BC and Alberta mills in order to recover the lost SPF lumber production.
The mill ceased production on June 12, but the planer will work until June 26 to clear its existing rough timber inventory.
Canfor also witnessed a loss in production at its Prince George sawmill after a fire on May 26 rendered the facility inoperable. The mill produces 185 million ft² of plywood a year, although Canfor said “it is not expected that this incident will have a material financial impact”.
